Dear Colleagues,

We regret to inform you of the death of Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Balátě, DrSc., our long-time colleague, and, at present, a honorary member of our Scientific Board. Prof. Balátě passed away on 6 December 2012. He is survived by his wife Eva and two children.


The Job Centre will be open during the Christmas period working days, namely on 27 December, 28 December and 31 December 2012.


The U4 Student Refectory is still under repair due to damages caused by the fire that occurred on 3 December 2012. The U4 Student Refectory is supposed to re-open on Thursday 13 December 2012 at the earliest.

In its regular session held on 4 December 2012 the TBU Academic Senate adopted Resolution No. 154/7 to call elections to the TBU AS:
“In compliance with Article 2 Para 1 of the Rules of Procedure and Election Rules of the TBU Academic Senate the TBU AS has called elections to the next term of office (2013 – 2016). The elections will be held between 18 and 23 February 2013. 4 academic employees and 2 students shall be elected as representatives to the TBU Academic Senate for each faculty.”
 


Students are allowed to take meals from the Staff Refectory in the U4 building for the period the U4 Student Refectory is under repair due to the fire that occurred on 3 December 2012. Students can of course use the Restaurant in the University Centre (U13) and the U5 Refectory at Jižní Svahy as well.

On 3 December 2012 around noon a fire broke out in the Student Refectory of Tomas Bata University in Zlín in Hradská street. The fire was caused by oil overheating in deep fat fryers near the serving line. It was first extinguished by a Refectory employee and a student of the Secondary Vocational School of Food Technology Zlín. They used powder fire extinguisher, and thus, according to firefighters, they prevented major damages to property. However, before being completely put out, the fire got into the air conditioning system and began to spread towards the roof.

Michaela Vašků, a student at the Faculty of Humanities, is a winner of the Philanthropy Award. Her Bachelor's thesis entitled 'A Way out of a Disease' won in the competition seeking the best thesis on philanthropy and organized annually by the Center for Philanthropy, a non-profit organization with its seat in Bratislava. Michaela Vašků will receive the award in Bratislava on Tuesday, 27 November 2012.

We would like to invite you to come to the newly opened games club in Zlín. You can play traditional and modern board games, we will explain the rules to you if necessary. Approx. 40 types of games are available, e.g. chess, Carcassonne, dominion, backgammon, go, scrabble, triomino, pünct, etc. You can also bring your own games with you. The club is situated in the former Victoria restaurant (U2 building) and is open from 17:00 to 21:30 on Tuesdays and Fridays. Refreshments are available.

Dear students, dear employees,
we have organized the event entitled 'Presentation of St. Martin’s Wine', to be held in the Refectory in the U4 building at 11:11:11 on 12 November 2012.
You can also taste the St. Martin’s Wine in the restaurant U13 and in the cafeteria in the U2 building from 12 to 16 November 2012.


An official time off has been announced by the Rector on the occasion of the “Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day” and related events held in Zlín. The official time off will start at 16:00 on 13 November 2012.


The TBU ice hockey team will face opponents from Finland in their third international match. The ice hockey players representing the University of Jyväskylä are, just like the TBU team, the academic champions of their country. The match has been organized as a part of the celebrations of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day and will be played at “Luděk Čajka” Ice-Hockey Stadium in Zlín at 19:00 on Wednesday, 21 November 2012.


Between 30 October and 2 November 2012, Tomas Bata University in Zlín will present its exhibition stand at the 19th edition of the Central European Study Abroad Fair Gaudeamus ® 2012 held in Brno. The event is focused on tertiary education and on Lifelong Learning. Many tertiary technical schools and higher education institutions from the Czech Republic and from abroad participate in the exhibition. Every year more than 30,000 third and fourth-year students at secondary schools, people interested in further education, career counsellors and experts from the teaching and education sector attend the Fair.

On Friday, 9 November 2012 the Open Day will take place at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications (only for applicants to degree programmes in Visual Arts and to Theory and Practice of Audiovisual Arts). Presentations in the relevant studios will be held at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Presentations will be held in the U16 building (Fashion Design, Shoe Design, Visual Communications, 3D Design, Product Design, Glass Design, Spatial Design), and in the U4 building (Graphic Design, Advertising Photography, Animation, Audiovisual Arts, Film Production).


Students at FMC (Shoe Design Studio, Glass Design Studio, Product Design Studio) and Mr Petr Stanický, a teacher at FMC (Glass Design Studio), presented their works at Blickfang, an international design exhibition for interior, fashion and jewellery held in the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.

The IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) at TBU in Zlín has organized another Job Fair in cooperation with Tomas Bata University in Zlín and the Job Centre. The event will take place in the lobby of the U5 building (Faculty of Applied Informatics) from 09:00 to 15:00 on Wednesday, 31 October 2012.


The new Technology Park focusing on information and communication technologies was officially opened on 24 October 2012. The Technology Park has been built as a part of the University campus U5 on Jižní Svahy, in close proximity to the Faculty of Applied Informatics. “The new Park will offer employment prospects right in Zlín to the Faculty graduates and will thus encourage them to stay in the region after completing their studies,” Prof. Petr Sáha, TBU Rector, points out.

An unusual exhibition is on view in the gallery on the second floor of the Town Hall in Zlín between 3 and 30 October 2012. The pictures on display were created by Ing. Roman Žák, a PhD student at the Faculty of Applied Informatics. This handicapped student, who is confined to a wheelchair, combines two seemingly incompatible specializations in his works: Visual arts and information technology. The result is a specific graphic design technique using a computer and entitled 'Ascii Art'.

A spot dealing with a social issue, entitled 'Little Fairy' and created by MgA. Veronika Mikalová, a graduate from the Faculty of Multimedia Communications,  has won the first place in the category 'Advertising' at the film festival 'Dobromysl' held in Dvůr Králové.

The Faculty of Humanities in cooperation with the Charity Shop and the "Dotek" counselling centre have organized the second edition of a charity sale, to be held in the U13 building from 13 to 15 November 2012.


Due to a water outage in the U13 building (University Centre, address: nám. T. G. Masaryka 5555) all classes scheduled to be held in the U13 building on Wednesday, 26 September 2012 are cancelled.


The fifth edition of the Researchers’ Night will be held at TBU in the U5 building (Faculty of Applied Informatics - Jižní Svahy) from 16:00 on 28 September 2012. The event is organized by Tomas Bata University in Zlín (TBU) in cooperation with the Sailors’ Union. The Techmania Science Centre is the national coordinator of the event held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, with the Representation of the European Commission in the CR and the Europe Direct network as partners.

A concert to honour the life and work of Tomas Bata and to mark the 80th anniversary of his tragic death will be held in the Congress Centre in Zlín at 19:00 on Wednesday, 26 September 2012. The concert (attendance by invitation only) has been organized by the Thomas Bata Foundation. 200 seats in the hall of the Congress Centre are reserved for the University. The workshop entitled ‘Become a Scientist!’ attracted strong interest from children – visitors to the 52nd edition of the Zlín Film Festival. The event was held in the atrium in the University Centre on Thursday, 31 May 2012. The children had an opportunity to carry out entertaining experiments under the supervision of PhD students from the Faculty of Technology and from the Faculty of Applied Informatics.

Leading Czech experts on TV and film marketing will give lectures at the Zlín Film Festival on 30 and 31 May 2012, during the tenth edition of the Rainbow Marble project.
The main speaker, who worked as a journalist for international magazines (Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Business Daily, Forbes,…) and authored the book Marketing to Moviegoers, is Mr. Robert Marich, who will come from New York in order to give his lecture. His lecture will be simultaneously interpreted.

The exhibition entitled “History of Filmmaking in Zlín” will be on display in the University Centre building. On the ground floor the “Internet Café” will be available to all visitors to the festival. The Rainbow Marble workshop and the festival closing party will take place in the same building.

From 16 to 20 April 2012 the second edition of the International Week organized by the TBU International Office took place. During the event, almost 40 teachers from partner universities abroad, e.g. from Slovakia, Poland, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Norway, etc. visited TBU. The event featured lectures by the teachers from abroad and presentations about foreign universities given at TBU faculties. During the International Day held on 16 April, TBU students presented their experience with study periods and traineeships abroad.

Mrs. Sonja Bata became the next holder of the TBU honorary degree, conferred upon her by Tomas Bata University in Zlín on 26 April 2012. “We decided to award the TBU honorary degree to Mrs. Sonja Bata in recognition of her long-term support of TBU – from its establishment to the present time, in recognition of her promotion of the University abroad and of her personal contribution to the development of international relations of TBU,” said Prof. Petr Sáha, Rector of TBU.

The Product Design Studio at FMC achieved another notable success, this time at the MOBITEX - the International Fair for Furniture and Interior Design 2012 held in Brno. Ms. Anna Štěpánková, a third-year student, took the first place in the student section of the international GRAND PRIX MOBITEX 2012 competition for her dining armchair Tamashi.

Ms. Anna Minxová, a third-year student (Glass Design Studio), took 3rd place in the international contest ‘Junior Glass Match’ held in Carlsbad.


We would like to invite you to attend a contest featuring presentations prepared by students and held in English or in German. The event entitled “Show-off / Zeig dich 2012” will take place in the room 549/U13 at 10:00 on Wednesday, 2 May 2012.


The tenth edition of the Rag Day will take place in Zlín on 30 April 2012. The traditional student spring festival will begin with a fancy dress parade passing through the centre of the town, followed by afternoon and evening concerts, the election of the Rag Day King and other events held in the Peace Square. Mrs. Sonja Bata will be the next holder of the honorary degree of Tomas Bata University in Zlín. The TBU Scientific Board approved the proposal submitted by Prof. Petr Sáha, TBU Rector, to confer the honorary degree of doctor honoris causa on Mrs. Sonja Bata in recognition of her long-term support of TBU – from its establishment to the present time, in recognition of her promotion of the University abroad and of her personal contribution to the development of international relations of TBU.

The official time off applies to TBU students and staff who have been invited to attend the event.

In compliance with Rector’s Decision No. 7/2012 an official time off has been announced by the Rector, and that from 12:30 on 30 April 2012 on the occasion of the Rag Day. During the time announced, no classes will be held at the TBU faculties and the examination sessions and consultation hours of academic staff shall be cancelled.


The Rector’s Sports Day organized by the Department of Physical Training will take place on 3 May 2012. All employees and students are cordially invited to actively participate in the event.


The Sailor’s Union & Študák have organized an exhibition football match between TBU teachers and students, to take place within the Rector’s Sports Day on the Vršava sports premises at 12:00 on 3 May 2012 (weather-permitting) . The entry is free, the event is open to the public.


The Sailor’s Union has organized the fourth edition of the “Apráles” festival featuring student bands at TBU in Zlín. The event is scheduled to take place at 12:00 on 25 April 2012.

On Wednesday, 18 April 2012, a celebration will be held to mark the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications (FMC). The buildings of the Faculty will be open to the public all day long.

14:00 — Exhibition opening ceremony (U13 building)
14:30 — Official opening of the programme for students and guests (in front of the U4 building)

On Monday, 23 April 2012 the MISS ACADEMIA 2012 contest will take place in the Congress Centre in Zlín. The topic of this year’s event is interaction. Passive spectators may become co-creators of the programme during the Gala Night. Tickets are available at the address: www.missacademia.cz.

This year’s PhD graduation ceremony will take place in the Assembly Hall (Mostní Street) at 10:00 on Thursday, 29 March 2012. During the academic ceremony, letters of appointment will be handed over to newly appointed Associate Professors. Prof. Petr Sáha, TBU Rector, will give the Rector’s Award to Prof. Pavel Škarka, Head of the Product Design Studio at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications, in recognition of his life’s work, and to Doc. Jaroslav Prokop for establishing the successful Studio of Advertising Photography at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications.


The new Job Centre will be opened at TBU at 10:00 on Monday, 2 April 2012. The Centre will provide career counselling and job search assistance to TBU students and graduates after completion of their studies.
The Job Centre office is located in the University Centre in Zlín, nám T. G. Masaryka 5555 (U13).


The Department of English and American Studies has organized a lecture by Prof. Anthony Harkins entitled “The Hillbilly in American Imagination”, to be held on 5 April 2012.

Two calendars published in cooperation with the company Antalis were successful in the twelfth edition of the contest CALENDAR OF THE YEAR 2012 Czech Republic. Ms. Veronika Nováková, a student of the Graphic Design Studio at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications, took the second place in recognition of her desk calendar. Mr. Petr Belák is the winner of the category ‘Promotional Effect and Main Idea’; at the same time he became the absolute winner and received the GRAND PRIX award. Congratulations to both of them!


On Tuesday, 3 April 2012, the third edition of the student music festival entitled ‘BusFest’ will take place in Zlín. It is an original event featuring bands performing in trolleybuses. The main part of the event will be followed by an evening afterparty held in the Golem club. The bands featured include Smola a hrušky from Slovakia and Genius Mess Poets from Šumperk.

The construction of the Laboratory Centre of the Faculty of Technology has been started; it is planned to be completed before the end of November 2013. The modern building situated next to the current building of the Faculty of Technology will house teaching and special laboratories equipped with modern devices.

The TBU ice hockey team, the current Czech academic champions, will play an international match against Manchester Metros, the team of the University of Manchester. The match will take place at "Luděk Čajka" Ice-Hockey Stadium in Zlín at 20:00 on Wednesday, 7 March 2012.


The gala night of the Percipio Art project will take place in the University Centre (U13 building) at 19:00 on Wednesday, 7 March 2012. This charitable project organized by students at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications is aimed at supporting the Children's Ward at Tomas Bata Regional Hospital in Zlín.

Students of Tomas Bata University in Zlín will hold an event entitled “Universities’ Night”, thus joining the so-called “Restless Week” organized by students of higher education institutions in the Czech Republic. The “Universities’ Night” will take place in the University Centre in Zlín at 18:00 on Tuesday, 28 February 2012.
The “Restless Week” will culminate on Wednesday, 29 February 2012, when the representatives of TBU students will take part in a protest march held in Prague.


The second Sailors’ Ball will take place at the Faculty of Applied Informatics at 19:00 on Saturday, 25 February 2012.


The twelfth edition of the Gala Ball of Tomas Bata University in Zlín will take place in the Congress Centre on Friday, 2 March 2012. Another major international award went to a designer from Zlín. A tractor design by MgA. David Polášek, a graduate from the Product Design Studio at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín, was successful in the competition Red Dot Design Award - Design Concept 2011.

The squash and badminton season of the University League – the biggest amateur league in the Czech Republic - starts in February! 21 squash players and 23 badminton players participated in the autumn season’s events held in Zlín. The upcoming spring season will take place from February to May, both beginners and experienced players are welcome to join the League.
