IN.GHOST, the most popular student magazine at TBU, has been published after a rather long pause. The editors worked hard throughout the entire semester in order to prepare 44 pages of high quality texts dealing with Christmas and winter topics. The TBU Faculty of Management and Economics offers a Bachelor’s programme in cooperation with Huddersfield University Business School in Great Britain. After completing the first two years of their Bachelor’s programme at TBU in Zlín, students have an opportunity to continue their third year at HUBS in Great Britain. The studies are completed with Bachelor’s exams and graduates receive the degree of BA (Hons) European Business. Although they can continue their Master’s studies at the FaME, most of the students who have graduated from Huddersfield University gain further theoretical experience at universities in Britain but also in Sweden, Norway or Korea.

A relaxed atmosphere prevailed at the meeting of the representatives of the Student Union and the FMC Communication Agency that took place on Monday 15 October 2007. Their activities were introduced to Mr Bata during the meeting. “We appreciated the great opportunity to meet Mr Bata personally. It is incredible how energetic and young in spirit he is. It is obvious that he enjoys the company of young people.” said one of the students. “I am usually informed about the events at the University by its management, therefore I was happy that I could get to know the way students spend their time and learn of their interests.” claimed 93-year-old Tomas Bata, who willingly posed with students for photographers in front of his father’s statue.

Reminder and Extension of Deadline

This is a gentle reminder that the extended and final paper submission deadline for the on-line International E-Conference on Computer, Information, and Systems Sciences, and Engineering (http://www.cisse2007.org) is in two weeks (22 October 2007). The Conference organizing committee has decided to extend the paper submission deadline due to numerous deadline extension requests from potential CISSE 2007 authors. CISSE 2007 has received more than 300 paper submissions so far from over 60 countries.

The Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) has been awarded a prestigious prize in the category “The Most Beneficial Business Property for the Development of Applied Research”. On 4 October, Slovanský dům in Prague hosted a special ceremony held to announce and award the winners of the 7th annual “Business Property of the Year” contest, co-organized by CzechInvest (Investment and Business Development Agency) and AFI (Association for Foreign Investments). The event was held under the auspices of the Minister of Industry and Trade, Mr Martin Říman.

On 19 - 25 September 2007, Bratislava, Slovakia hosted the "Prix Danube Festival", the 19th biennial film and television festival for children and the youth, which introduced 87 broadcasters and producers from 39 countries. The main competition was entered by 104 children's films, particularly from traditionally powerful Scandinavian countries, Great Britain and France, but also from Korea, Japan and Brazil. The competition comprised several categories: feature, animation, educational programmes and documentaries. Within each category, one prize and two certificates of merit were awarded by three juries (adult jury, children's jury and youth jury).

Welcoming parties for freshman students will take place simultaneously, starting at 8 pm. All the freshmen, other university students and anybody interested in spending the night enjoying themselves will have a great chance to listen to different sorts of music, dance, take part in various competitions and just have fun. For those who hold an ISIC card there is no admission fee for this event. The fee for freshmen is CZK 30, for others it is CZK 50.

In Golem you can enjoy Senzace příštího léta, Fast Food Orchestra and DJ Boston, in Musicland A DJs Jose&Lexxa, and Flip will offer golden oldies.

The Siemens Company has announced the 10th award contest for the best Diploma, Doctoral and Research Theses entitled "Cena Siemens - Werner von Siemens Excellence Award 2007". So far, 140 candidates have been awarded and over CZK 4 million has been given to students and research teams.

On 18 September 2007, an international conference entitled "Education and Knowledge Aiming for the Successful Development of the Zlín Region as a Knowledge-Based and Business Region" will be held in the Assembly Hall of the Academia Centre at TBU in Zlín.


The conference, co-organized by Radanal, s.r.o., Pardubice, the Nutrition Association, Prague, and the Faculty of Technology of Tomas Bata University in Zlín, will be held at the Congress Centre of the Czech University of Agriculture in Prague - Suchdol on 19 - 21 September 2007. An agreement on the extension of mutual cooperation between TBU and the East China University of Science and Technology was signed by representatives of both educational institutions in July.
”After more than ten years we have agreed upon intensifying our cooperation, and that regarding the student/staff exchange in particular. Besides, we are planning to continue our cooperation on joint R&D projects with our Chinese colleagues. We would like to have talented students from China studying in our Ph.D. programmes,“ said Petr Sáha, Visiting Professor at the East China University of Science and Technology.

On 26th June 2007 a new Laboratory for integrated technological and control systems in buildings officially opened at the Faculty of Applied Informatics of Tomas Bata University in Zlín. The laboratory will be used for teaching, experimental and research purposes and focusing on control, monitoring and management of advanced technological systems in the so-called intelligent buildings. It is above all intended for students studying in the study course Information Technologies, with the specialization Integrated systems in buildings – intelligent buildings, with this study course to welcome its first students after the holidays. Last but not least the laboratory will be used for R&D purposes.

On Friday, 29th June 2007, Mr. Mirek Topolánek, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, is expected to visit TBU. During his visit he will attend one of the graduation ceremonies.

On Thursday, 21st June 2007, the Textbook and Souvenir Shop will be closed due to the TBU's new rector inauguration. Thank you for your understanding!

Tomas Bata University in Zlín is ranked No. 11 as regards the evaluation of quality of the Czech higher education institutions (as of 6th June 2007). The evaluation was made in accordance with criteria commonly used in advanced countries, i.e. depending on the results of last year‘s scientific activities and publications. The ranking features 21 public higher education institutions in the Czech Republic.

The Academic Senate at the Faculty of Technology of Tomas Bata University in Zlín calls the election of a candidate to be appointed as the new Dean at the Faculty of Technology, in compliance with Article 1 Paragraph 3 of the Election Rules. The election will take place during the regular session of the Academic Senate at the Faculty of Technology at 13:00 on 28/05/2007.

From the kitchen table to the EU - Former Erasmus Students invited to Brussels

On 24th April two former Erasmus Students of Tomas Bata University in Zlín presented their Erasmus Complete project to the European Commission.

The Erasmus Complete project aims at informing future exchange students about all the possible options of spending one semester abroad. It is run as a student to student project – and is closely linked to Tomas Bata University: “It all started in our kitchen during our Erasmus Semester in Zlin” Ricardo Dores, one of the project managers, remembers “and now we have produced the unique idea of improving the Erasmus Programme back at that institution which enabled us to spend this unforgettable semester abroad.”

In connection with the "Rector's Sports Day", to take place on 10th May 2006, an official day off has been announced by the TBU Rector for that day and that in accordance with the Rector's Decree No. 9/2007. During the time announced, no classes will be held at the TBU faculties in Zlín and the examination sessions and tutorial hours of academic workers shall be cancelled.

In connection with the Rag Day, to take place on 24th April 2007, an official day off from 12:00 has been announced for that day and that in accordance with the Rector's Decree No. 7/2007.

On 10th April 2007 the TBU Academic Senate elected the new TBU Rector, and that in the third round of the election. Prof. Ing. Ignác Hoza, CSc, currently the Dean at the Faculty of Technology is to head the University during the next four years. Four candidates had been nominated for the post: Besides Prof. Hoza also Prof. Ing. Jiří Polách, CSc., Head of the Department of Enterprise Economics at the TBU Faculty of Management and Economics, Prof. Ing. Roman Prokop, CSc., Vice-Rector for Pedagogical Activities, and Prof. Ing. František Trnka, CSc. To be appointed, one of the candidates had to receive the votes cast by the absolute majority of the TBU Academic Senate members – i.e. at least 16 votes from among 30 Academic Senate members.

All TBU students are cordially invited to attend lectures held by Mr. James Hill (USA) in the U12 lecture hall between 8:00 - 10:00 (Human communication) and between 12:00 - 14:00 (Child abuse) on 12th April 2007.

The TBU Academic Senate has announced new dates for the university’s rector election. The candidates can be nominated before 10:00 on 05/04/2007. At 12:00 the candidates’ names will be posted on the official board. At 13:00 the candidates will make a public presentation to the academic community. The election of the candidate to be appointed as the new TBU Rector will be held on 10th April 2007.

The Whitsun Dialogue Symposium, co-organized by the government of the Austrian federal state called Styria within the “Spirit & the Present“ forum, is scheduled to take place between 24nd and 26th May 2007. The symposium shall focus on the topic „Europe – Dreams and Traumas“. Students interested in participation who return the registration form by 11th April 2007 can be granted a scholarship including free admission and accommodation + a part of their travel expenses to be covered.

On 16th and 17th April 2007 an international conference entitled World of Information Systems 2007 will take place at Tomas Bata University in Zlín.
This year's edition (No.4) is expected to be attended by more than 500 participants from the Czech Republic and from abroad. Leading international as well as Czech IT companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, Infor Global Solutions, IDS Scheer etc. will present at the conference. The conference's main organizers are: doc. Ing. Tickets for the final night of Miss Academia of the Czech Republic 2007, to be held in the Municipal Theatre in Zlín on 4th April 2007, will be on sale not only in the theatre but also between 27th March and 4th April on the TBU premises.

Today, i.e. on Wednesday, 28th March 2007, at the beginning of each lesson, the university students will bring flowers to their teachers and congratulate them on the occasion of the Teachers’ Day. After receiving positive response last year, this small celebration has again been organized by the Public Relations Office in cooperation with the TBU Student Union.

The Czech Swimming Championships for Disabled Athletes, organized by the Czech Sports Association for Mentally Handicapped, will take place in the swimming baths in Zlín in Hradská Street (25 metre pool)) on Wednesday, 28th March 2007. Co-organizers are students at the TBU Faculty of Multimedia Communications in cooperation with students at the Business and Technical College, Ltd.

The TBU Faculty of Applied Informatics (FAI) will present the study course "Security technologies, systems and management" in their own exhibition stand at the Pragoalarm 2007 (www.pragoalarm.cz) trade fair, to be held in Prague between 11th and 13th April 2007 on the exhibition premises in Holešovice. On 12th April between 13:00 and 17:30 FAI will, in addition, organize a workshop entitled ‘Perspective of university education in the sphere of security’.

On Friday, 2nd February, the first of two semi-finals in the 11th edition of the Miss Academia of the Czech Republic beauty contest took place in the Hilton hotel in Prague with more than 30 beautiful female students at Czech higher education institutions participating in the pageant. 5 contenders plus one substitute had the luck to be selected by the jury and to go through to the final where the first prize to win will be a car – a Škoda Roomster, to be rented from the contest’s main partner, the Škoda Auto Company, during a period of 6 months.

The Gala Ball of Tomas Bata University in Zlín, seventh in edition already, is to be held on 23rd March 2007, starting from 20:00 at the Hotel Moskva in Zlín. The Ball is - as usual - being organized by students at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications within the subject called Communication Agency. The entire evening will have an air of French chic.

Prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc., the Rector of Tomas Bata University in Zlín and the Chairman of the Czech Rectors’ Conference was appointed a member of the Research and Development Council during a session of the Government of the Czech Republic on 15th November 2006. The students at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín have begun the preparations for the 11th edition of the Miss Academia 2007 beauty contest. The traditional student competition aiming at selecting the number one female university student intends to dispel the popular myth about beautiful girls not being both good-looking and intelligent. Female university students as well as students of technical colleges will be invited to participate in the contest.

The contest will culminate in the final night held in Zlín in early April, where the new student beauty queen is to be selected, excelling the other participants not only in beauty but in her personal charm and intelligence.

The Tomas Bata Foundation has the pleasure to announce the creation of the „Thomas Bata Foundation Prize" to be awarded to a student of Tomas Bata University for the best thesis written and successfully defended in the English language for the academic year 2006-2007. The Prize is aiming at arousing interest among students in applying their knowledge of English as well as at stimulating the development of bilingualism at TBU. The winning candidate will be offered a two week internship with the BATA SHOE ORGANIZATION in a foreign country and depending on the candidate's line of study.
