On Thursday, 14th December at 15:00 the international students at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at Tomas Bata University in Zlín will present the result achieved thanks to their communication project – the website www.ZLINTERNATIONAL.utb.cz – on the ground floor of the Zlín Regional Authority Building (Building No. 21).
After three months of intensive work four students from Germany and Portugal created a website aiming at making Zlín attractive for international students, and intended to help the students during their studies at TBU in Zlín as well as to provide them with information on the town.

The fourth edition of “Paraparáda”, i.e. of the sporting event featuring "handicapped" and "healthy" participants, will be held on Thursday, 7th December, between 13:00 and 16:00 in the sports hall at the Secondary Technical School situated at the address tř. T. Bati 4187 in Zlín. The competitors will again enjoy a relaxed atmosphere during this unconventional sporting happening. Students at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at Tomas Bata University in Zlín in cooperation with the “Handicap” Movement have prepared a demanding competition for the participants. This year’s topic will take the brave competitors into a mysterious and enigmatic jungle.

An ice hockey tournament is to be played by participating teams nominated by FT, FaME, FMC and FAI. The first match is scheduled to take place on Monday, 4th December 2006 at the Ice Stadium. Meeting at 19:30, the match is to be started at 20:00. Come and cheer your team!

In connection with the event called "Illuminating of the University Christmas Tree", to take place on 6th December 2006, an official day off starting at 16:00 has been announced for that day and that in accordance with the Rector's Decree No. 10/2006. At the time announced, no classes will be held at the TBU faculties in Zlin and the examination sessions and tutorial hours of academic workers shall be cancelled.

In December 2006 the TBU Academic Senate elections are to be called, including information on exact dates and organizational instructions. Currently the necessary legislative modifications are in progress. The elections are scheduled to take place in the second week of February 2007.


Mr. Vladimír Sedlařík, M.Sc., Ph.D. from the Polymer Centre at the Faculty of Technology has become the new Siemens Award winner coming from TBU in Zlín. In November he received the Siemens Award for his dissertation entitled Biodegradable Polymers Based on Dairy Waste.

PhDr. Miroslava Kopicová, the Czech Minister of Education, Youth and Sports has appointed a new member of the TBU Board of Governors, Mr. Libor Lukáš, the Governor of the Zlín Region. He will be the successor to PhDr. Zdeněk Dostál, a long-time member of the Board of Governors, that had quitted the post.

This year we commemorate 130th birthday anniversary of Tomas Bata - the founder of the world-renowned shoemaking company Bata. On the occasion of this anniversary the Tomas Bata Foundation has taken a decision to hold a specialized conference aiming at evaluating the personality of Tomas Bata upon the basis of the latest research work. The conference is organized as a representative discussion forum featuring leading Czech and international experts, a forum on the personality of Tomas Bata, on his importance for the Czech and world history, politics, society and economy as well as on his management system. The conference will take place on 30/11 and 01/12/2006.


The Ministry for Regional Development of the Czech Republic and Tomas Bata University in Zlín have organized an open discussion with Ms. Miroslava Kopicová, the Czech Minister of Education and Mr. Petr Gandalovič, the Czech Minister for Regional Development, with the topic of the discussion being "the European Union – what is offered by EU as far as education is concerned". The discussion is scheduled to take place on 20th November 2006 at 14:00 in Otto Wichterle's Hall - TBU in Zlín, Mostní Street (U2 building). All students and employees are cordially invited to come!

The University Refectory in Štefánikova Street (U4) will serve supper on working days (Monday through Thursday) between 17:00 and 19:00, at the counter for employees.
On Friday no supper is served due to lack of interest.


First–year students in the specialization Fashion Design at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications will be included in the Designers’ and Shoemakers’ Guild on the occasion of the Shoemaker’s Fair organized by the Shoe Museum on Sunday 29/10, to be started at 10:00.

On the occasion of this year's Day of the Fight for Freedom and Democracy (17th November) a series of sports events is scheduled to take place: A swimming relay race (13/11), a volleyball tournament played by mixed teams (14/11), a squash tournament for men (14/11) and women (16/11), an aerobic master class (21/11) as well as an international match in indoor football featuring the Czech Republic vs. the Slovak Republic (21/11). All events will be organized by the Department of Physical Training.

Students at the TBU Faculty of Multimedia Communications (specialized in Fashion design) have achieved international success thanks to a fashion collection inspired by the work of W. A. Mozart. In cooperation with a studio within the Department of Textiles at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava the students have created a fashion collection inspired by the 250th birth anniversary of W. A. Mozart. Currently the model dresses have been arranged to form a touring exhibition entitledSpirit of Mozart”, launched by an opening ceremony on 02/10/2006 in the Bertramka Villa in Prague (Mozart’s favourite location), and planned to travel abroad: On 13/10 selected model dresses were presented at a fashion show in Paris, in November the collection will arrive in Saint Etienne (France), and will be shown in Vienna in December. The work on the fashion collection involves cooperation with the French company “Recycle” – because the original intention consisted in making full use of recycled clothing from the point of view of visual arts.

In the session held on 19/09/2006 the Academic Senate of Tomas Bata University in Zlín decided on a fifth faculty to be established and named the Faculty of Humanity and Health-Care Studies. The decision of the Academic Senate was preceded by the approval given by the Accreditation Committee, received by the University after negotiations on 12/09/2006. Thus, the new faculty can be opened on 1st January 2007 as originally planned.

At first the new university department will be located in several buildings: Office rooms for the Dean’s Office in the building in the square T. G. Masaryka 1279, other workplaces in Mostní Street. Detached workplaces for health-care studies will be situated in the Secondary Nursing School and in the Nursing College in Zlín.

An exhibition of photographs that will serve as a meeting of several schools of photography in the Czech Republic has been organized by the FMC's Studio of Advertising Photography to take place on 13th and 14th October 2006. The exhibition will inform the visitors about the main orientation of each school, its study programmes as well as with the results of the students’ work (Participants: e.g. Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí n. L., Institute of Creative Photography in Opava, Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava etc.).

On Tuesday, 17th October 2006, at 17:00 in the room 0111 (U2 building) presentations will be given by international student teachers working at Tomas Bata University in Zlín within the exchange programme organized by the IAESTE Association. Each student teacher shall present his/her home country: Brazil, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Austria and Germany. Those interested from among the students will be supplied with information concerning possible specialized practical training provided abroad in 2007.

Tomas Bata University in Zlín has been awarded the Diploma Supplement Label (a certificate issued by the European Commission) that is increasing the prestige of the University among European higher education institutions. The certificate is in effect during 3 academic years and is intended for those higher education institutions that provide their graduates with the Diploma Supplement. TBU is one of four higher education institutions in the Czech Republic receiving the Diploma Supplement Label this year (together with other universities e.g. from Austria, France, Denmark, Finland, Portugal and other European countries).

A meeting of people coming from all over the globe – Global village, took place on 3rd October 2006 from 9:00 to 14:00 in the University building in Mostní Street in Zlín. Within the meeting, organized by the student-run organization AIESEC in cooperation with TBU in Zlín and the Zlín Region, international students (or people working in the Czech Republic) were enabled to present their home countries.
Participants coming from Austria, Romania, Sri Lanka, India, Russia, Slovenia, Republic of South Africa, Kazakhstan and Vietnam were expected to come. Secondary school students in Zlín and the surroundings were informed about the TBU study programmes offered.

A delegation including university teachers and academic workers coming from a partner higher education institution in Krakow, Poland, was received at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications between 29/09 – 01/10/2006. The Faculty has been maintaining a very good, long-running contact with the Polish academy called „Akademia sztuk pieknych“, with both institutions organizing exchange stays regarding both students and teachers within the Socrates/Erasmus programme, shared workshops, exhibitions etc. The whole programme of the visit was organized by the Department of Advertising Photography and Graphics.

The official matriculation of new students at the University Institute took place in the Assembly Hall (Mostní Street) on Monday, 25/09/2006 at 13:00 (study programmes Philology and Health Care), at 15:00 (study programme Specialization in Pedagogy, couse Social Pedagogy, full-time and combined study).
The matriculation of students at the Faculty of Technology is scheduled to take place on 06/10/2006 from 8:30 to 14:30.

Rotary Grants for University Teachers provide funds to higher education faculty to travel abroad to teach at colleges and universities in developing countries. The program is intended to build international understanding and foster development while strengthening higher education in low-income countries. The program also aims to establish ties between higher education institutions, leading to the exchange of ideas and information across the globe. The subjects taught by grant recipients must be relevant to the needs of the local population and contribute to the area's socio-economic development. For 2005-06, 20 grants were awarded.

In September 2006 Tomas Bata University in Zlín has become the exclusive user of the premises in the Regional Educational Centre in Uherské Hradiště (situated in the former army barracks). Two of the TBU faculties are planning to expand to the newly rebuilt rooms, namely the Faculty of Technology and the Faculty of Multimedia Communications. The opening ceremony of the Regional Educational Centre is scheduled to take place on 18th September 2006.

Between 6th and 8th September 2006 the Faculty of Applied Informatics of Tomas Bata University in Zlín is holding a meeting of departments of automation and cybernetics at technological universities in the Czech and Slovak Republic, called PRINCIPIA CYBERNETICA 2006.

„The meeting is aiming at exchange of information and sharing of experience as well as at a discussion about possible cooperation on shared projects and presentation of results of the scientific tasks being solved. Furthermore, the participants shall analyse problems related to the education of students at universities and assess the current position and prospects of university graduates in the business world,“ said one of the members of the organizing committee Mgr. Milan Adámek, Ph.D.

Due to the „Construction of the central cooling source“ in the U2 building being completed, on Sunday 10/09/2006 electric power is to be switched off in the U2 building (Mostní Street), and that between 08:00 and 14:00.
This will result in an outage of all data services dependent on the data centre in the U2 building computer network, Internet, data servers, information systems (SAP as well as STAG), telephones, etc.

From 11th to 15th September 2006 the Textbook and Souvenir Shop will be open between 12:00 and 14:00.

An exhibition featuring the works made by students at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín (TBU) will take place in the town of Uherské Hradiště. All the visual studios of the University - to expand to the town of Uherské Hradiště starting from September - will show their presentations.

The exhibition will be held between 1st and 21st September 2006 in the „Reduta“-building that will be housing the works made in the studios of Audiovision and animation, Fashion design, Footwear design and Industrial design, and in the „Hvězda“-cinema with the exhibits made by the studios of Advertising photography and Graphic design on display.

Today, Tomas Bata University in Zlín has been paid visit by Thomas, the eighteen-year-old grandson of Tomas Bata, Jr. It has been his first visit to the university named after his great-grandfather, the founder of the Zlín shoemaking factory. „It is my second time in Zlín, but I cannot well recall my first visit as I was only four years old,“ admitted Thomas Bata, who has recently finished his high school studies. After the holidays he is going to study political science in the Scottish town of Edinburgh.
Thomas Bata, the youngest, resembles his grandfather not only as far as his face is concerned but also in his friendly and positive attitude and interest shown in everything presented to him. He was very much interested in our Faculty of Multimedia Communications, where he was informed about all study programmes offered. If he had not decided to study political science, he would have been thinking about studying in a study programme focusing on arts at our University, “ said Prof. Petr Sha, TBU Rector. In order to understand better his family roots, the youngest T. Bata has decided to learn Czech. „I will come back in the autumn and learn Czech at least during a month,“ he promised.

On 2nd August 2006, three international students obtained a Certificate in Czech for Foreigners at Tomas Bata University in Zlín. The certificates were festively presented to the students by prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc., the Rector of Tomas Bata University. The students are now able to join their Czech fellow students and study programmes taught in the Czech language.

As the Rector stated, “The students have had 800 Czech lessons focused on grammar, conversation and writing. This now enables them to understand spoken and written language, discuss problems, write essays, etc. At the end of the course they took a Certificate examination specifying the level of their knowledge.”

The cafeteria in the U2 building will be open from 07/08/2006 with restricted opening hours from 8:00 to 14:30.

Ms. Petra Buzková, J.D., Minister of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, has appointed a new member of the Board of Governors at Tomas Bata University in Zlín, Ms. Alena Gajdůšková, Ed.D. The appointment came into legal force on 30/06/2006.

The refectory Štefánikova U4 will be closed from 10/07 to 30/07/2006.
The refectory Jižní Svahy U5 will be closed from 10/07 to 31/07/2006.
The cafeteria in the U2 building will be closed from 17/07 to 07/08/2006.

From 31/07/2006 to 15/09/2006 the meals served do not include supper.
Starting from 18/09/2006 the refectories will return to their normal opening hours and provide lunch as well as supper.
All employees are entitled to receive the SYAS meal tickets during 15 working days.


From 17th to 21st July and from 7th to 11th August 2006 the main cashier's office (U2/Mostní 5139) will be closed due to the cashier's holiday.
During the mentioned periods no cash transactions can be carried out.


From 30/06/2006 to 17/09/2006 the Textbook and Souvenir Shop is to be closed!

At the University of the 3rd Age the graduation ceremony is in preparation, to take place in the Assembly Hall in the building in the Mostní Street in Zlín on 23rd June 2006 at 10:00. Afterwards a ceremony to open the exhibition of works made by graduates in Visual Arts will take place.

Another major event organized by the University of the 3rd Age is expected to be the international conference entitled "Education provided by the Universities of the 3rd Age in the Czech Republic", to be held from 26th to 28th June 2006 in Zlín.

A three-day sports tournament featuring competitors from among students at universities in Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic - Sport University Cup (Suni Cup) – will take place at the TBU in Zlín on 15/06 – 17/06 2006.
 
For the 3rd year in a row the tournament is being organized by the students at FMC in cooperation with the Department of Physical Training and its Head, Mr. Zdeněk Melichárek, M. Sc. Students from universities in the twin towns of Veszprém (Hungary) and Trenčín (Slovakia) are expected to come and participate. The Zlín University will select volleyball and soccer teams ready to face the opponents. All participants will be enabled to test their accuracy in a bowling competition and enjoy the supporting programme including a beach volleyball tournament and a swim relay race.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition featuring student work entitled Visual Arts at FMC is scheduled to take place on 13/06/06 at 15:00 on the third floor of the Bata Skyscraper (building holding the Regional Authority of the Zlín Region, Tř. T. Bati 21, Zlín). The exhibition is to be staged until the end of September 2006.

Until 16/06/06 the touring exhibition entitled University Centre in Zlín - Creating the Architecture of the 3rd Millenium shall be on display at the same location, arranged and organized by the Public Relations Office.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition on Samuel Beckett: Life and works (to be on view until 13th June 2006) took place on 7th June 2006 in the foyer of the rectorate building in the Mostní Street. The touring exhibition instigated by the Irish government has been organized by the Embassy of Ireland in Prague in cooperation with the Tomas Bata University in Zlín on the occasion of an important anniversary (100th birthday) of Samuel Beckett, an Irish playwright, novelist and a Nobel Laureate in literature.

This year again the TBU in Zlín acts as a co-organizer of the International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Zlín, awaiting the arrival of the film industry's elite from the Czech Republic as well as abroad between 28th May and 3rd June 2006. The University will host a series of the festival's events in its buildings. The Rectorate building in the Mostní Street shall house the festival's headquarters – the accreditation, information and press centre. Film screenings, press conferences and accompanying events are planned to be held in the Assembly Hall and in several lecture halls. The inauguration ceremony of the Faculty of Applied Informatics (FAI) of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín and of its first Dean, Prof. Vladimír Vašek, CSc., was held on 23rd May 2006 in the university building at the Jižní Svahy campus in Zlín.
Inaugurated as the new Dean, Prof. Vašek took the solemn oath and received the academic symbols - insignia - intended for the Dean and the Faculty. University representatives were present at the academic ceremony including the University Rector, Prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc., giving the inaugural address.
The chain as a symbol of an academic post including the related competences was handed over to four newly appointed Vice-Deans of the Faculty of Applied Informatics: RNDr. Jan Ostravský, CSc., Ing. Tomáš Sysala, Ph.D., Mgr. Milan Adámek, Ph.D. and doc. Ing. Ivan Zelinka, CSc.
Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Balátě, DrSc. and Prof. Ing. Antonín Víteček, dr. h. c., were awarded commemorative medals as a reward for their contribution to the establishment of FAI as the fourth faculty of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín.

From 24th May 2006 to 5th June 2006 the Textbook and Souvenir Shop will be closed in order to provide space for the 46th edition of the Film Festival.


The opening ceremony to inaugurate the Laboratories of Integrated Automation shall take place on 23rd May 2006 at 13:30 at the Faculty of Applied Informatics at the Jižní Svahy campus, in the room No. 107.

The inauguration ceremony to officially open the Faculty of Applied Informatics of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín, established on 1st January 2006, will be held on Tuesday, 23rd May 2006 at 11:00 in the great lecture hall A107 at the Faculty of Applied Informatics at the Jižní Svahy campus in Zlín.

Senior citizens interested in extending their education are enabled to enrol on new courses opened by the University of the Third Age at the Tomas Bata University in Zlín.

An exhibition on Samuel Beckett is planned to take place from 7th to 13th June 2006 in the foyer of the rectorate building in the Mostní Street. The touring exhibition instigated by the Irish government has been organized by the Embassy of Ireland in Prague in cooperation with the Centre for Irish Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the Charles University on the occasion of an anniversary (100th birthday) of Samuel Beckett, a playwright, novelist and a Nobel Laureate in literature.
It is a great honour for the Tomas Bata University in Zlín to be enabled to host an exhibition that has already been staged in Prague and Budapest and that is to be transferred from Zlín to Moscow and other European cities.

The Tomas Bata University, the Brno University of Technology, the Czech National Committee of the IMEKO and the TBU Academia Centre would like to invite you to participate in the 29th edition of DIAGON 2006 - an international conference including exhibition focusing on technical diagnostics, reliability and security. The conference is scheduled to take place on 11th May 2006 in the university building in the Mostní Street in Zlín.

On 4th and 5th May 2006 a conference entitled "In Search of New Europe" shall take place in the Prague 1 town hall, Mariánské nám., featuring several pedagogues from the Faculty of Management and Economics of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín. In the adjoining area the exhibition "University Centre in Zlín - Creating the Architecture of 3rd Millenium" will be on display. The mentioned exhibition, prepared by the Public Relations Department in cooperation with the Faculty of Multimedia Communications, is travelling around big cities all over the Czech Republic.

A meeting of companies active in the boot-and-shoe-industry from the Zlín Region will take place on 2nd May 2006 at 12:00 in the Bata Villa in Zlín. As a special guest Mr. Tomas Bata Jr. is expected to be present. The meeting is organized by the Technology Innovation Centre Ltd. together with the Tomas Bata Foundation within the project “Exploring of the possibilities of establishing a footwear cluster” in the Zlín Region.

In connection with the "Rector's Sports Day", to take place on 11th May 2006, an official day off has been announced by the TBU Rector for that day and that in accordance with the Rector's Decree No. 3/2006. During the time announced, no classes will be held at the TBU faculties in Zlín and the examination sessions and tutorial hours of academic workers shall be cancelled.

In compliance with the Rector's Decree No. 2/2006, on 03/05/2006 and 09/05/2006 the classes are to be taught as scheduled for Mondays, in order to substitute the lessons cancelled due to public holidays on 01/05/2006 and 08/05/2006 respectively.

After meticulous preparations lasting many days, on 5th April 2006 the finalists of the 10th edition of the Miss Academia beauty pageant took the stage at the Grand Cinema in Zlín to contest the title of the number one student of a university or a higher education institution in the Czech Republic.
At last, the title of Miss Academia 2006 was won by Miss Eva Čerešňáková, student of the Faculty of International Relations at the University of Economics in Prague. Miss Jana Baťková from the University of Pardubice became the 1st runner-up, the title of the 2nd runner-up went to Miss Barbora Mošová from the Faculty of Physical Culture at the Palacký University in Olomouc.

A lecture on European Parliament and European foreign policy given by doc. Ing. Josef Zieleniec, Member of the European Parliament and Member of the International Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, shall be held on 12th April 2006 at 9:30 at the Tomas Bata University in Zlin, Mostni Street, in the room 0111. Immediately after the lecture a discussion will take place including the following topics:

  • Is the European Union capable of protecting its citizens?
  • Terror threat - international aspects
  • Current issues of the European policy (European funds - finance allocation, controversy over the European Constitution etc.)

On Monday, 3rd April 2006 130 years passed since Mr. Tomas Bata (1876-1932) was born, the founder of the Bata Shoe company in Zlin and an ingenious entrepreneur whose name our University carries. Prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc., the TBU rector, together with representatives of the Zlin Region, the statutory town of Zlin, the Tomas Bata Foundation and the Alumni Club of the Bata School of Work put flowers on the grave of Tomas Bata in the Forest Cemetery in Zlin to honour his memory on this day.

The last concert of the subscription concerts' series intended for students will be more of popular character, planned to take place on 5th April 2006 at 19:00 in the Arts House in Zlín. The audience shall enjoy listening to Czech evergreens, e.g. songs by Jaroslav Ježek and V+W, songs from Czech movie musicals and compositions by D. Ellington, C.-M. Schönberg, A.L.Webber, G. Gershwin etc. The concert will be conducted by Mr. Jan Kučera, a young conductor and arranger from Prague.

The preparations for the traditional "Miss Academia 2006" contest organized by the FMC students shall culminate in the final night to take place on 5th April 2006 in the Grand Cinema in Zlín. This year's edition will be a celebration of the contest's 10th anniversary, therefore only ten finalists have been selected instead of twelve as in the previous years. The final ten includes female students representing universities and colleges in Pardubice, Prague, Olomouc, Ostrava and Zlín. Qualified for the finals has also a student at the Private Arts College in Zlín, Miss Barbora Kocmánková.

On 28/03/2006  Prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc., rector of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín, handed over the letter of appointment to the new Dean of the Faculty of Applied Informatics (FAI) prof. Ing. Vladimír Vašek, CSc., elected to hold office as Dean with a four-year term of office by the FAI Academic Senate in a secret ballot on 27/03/2006.

A touring exhibition entitled "University Centre in Zlín - Creating Architecture of 3rd Millenium" dedicated to the construction of the Congress and University Centre Zlín is on display in the premises of Centro Zlín - Malenovice (Carrefour), lasting until 13th April 2006. Thus, the general public will be offered the opportunity of getting information on the project of the multifunctional building, intended to be built before the end of 2007, replacing the former Masaryk Schools and expected to become the architectural jewel of the regional capital. Afterwards the exhibition shall be presented in hypermarkets and department stores in other towns in the Czech Republic (Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc, Liberec, Carlsbad, Č. Budějovice, etc.)

The exhibition has been organized and staged by the Public Relations Department together with the Department of  Advertising Photography and Graphics and the Department of 3D Design of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications.

The organizers of the 2006 Rag Day would like to inform everyone who intends to attend this traditional student event of the date having been changed. Instead of 26th April, as initially planned, the Rag Day shall take place on 16th May. The rest remains unchanged.

This year’s edition will be started at 13:00 with the traditional parade of young people wearing masks and fancy dresses and marching through the town and finished at 3 a. m. on the next day. The central topic of the 2006 Rag Day shall be the music.
The organizers - students of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications - promise the visitors a colourful mixture of concerts featuring performers of various musical styles. The motto of this year’s holiday is: “Whatever you are a fan of: rock, pop, punk or techno, you will find something to enjoy on the Rag Day!” Hence, the 2006 Rag Day is going to satisfy lovers of almost all musical styles.

The life of five young people coming from Sri Lanka, one of the areas hit by the tsunami natural disaster last year, has changed radically in the early March of this year. Thanks to a scholarship awarded by the Tomas Bata University in Zln they will be given an opportunity to start university studies. Thus, the humanitarian aid offered to Sri Lanka by the TBU University Headquarters immediately after the catastrophe is taking shape now.

A discussion with Mr. Cyril Svoboda, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, on priorities of the Czech foreign policy is to be held on Tuesday, 14th March 2006 at 15:00 in the assembly hall in the Congress Centre of the TBU in the Mostni Street in Zlin. Everyone is cordially invited to come!

The first edition of the festival of documentary films on human rights entitled “Thirty decagrams of freedom” has been organized by FMC students to be held on 7th-10th March 2006. The films have been selected and borrowed from the archive of the national festival “One World.” They will be shown in the Zlin skyscraper and followed by a discussion aimed at the Topic of the Day and held with a guest. The topics of individual days are: Censored, Children and Outcasts, Silent Suffering of Women, Man in the Leading Role.

Prof. Ing. Petr Saha, CSc., rector of the Tomas Bata University in Zlin, has become the new chairman of the Czech Conference of Rectors after formerly holding the post of the vice-chairman in charge of economic and social affairs. The change at the post of the chairman of the Czech Conference of Rectors was due to the fact that the former chairman's (prof. Ing. Ivan Wilhelm, CSc.) term of office as rector at the Charles University in Prague has expired. The election was held at the 84th Plenary Session of the Czech Conference of Rectors held in Olomouc on 23rd and 24th February 2006.

With effect from 17/02/06 prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc., rector of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín, appointed a new dean of the Faculty of Technology. The office will be taken over by prof. Ing. Ignác Hoza, CSc., who will replace the former dean, prof. Ing. Josef Šimoník, CSc.,  who has headed the faculty since 2003. The term of office of the new dean is four years.


On Friday, 10th February 2006, the semifinal of the beauty contest Miss Academia 2006, organized by students, took place in the REM club in the hotel Moskva featuring 28 girls competing for participation in the contest final in front of an expert jury.

On 27/2/06 a constituent general meeting is to take place in the hotel Moskva in Zlin, aimed at establishing a Plastics Processing Industry Cluster as an association of legal entities. It represents a successful completion of the mapping of plastics processing industry in the Zlin Region carried out by the Technology Innovation Centre Ltd. as one of their first projects and financed by the Zlin Regional Authority and CzechInvest.

A delegation from the Gambia headed by the local Minister of Education, Mrs. Ata Lamin Faye, was received on 1st February by Prof. Petr Saha, rector of the Tomas Bata University in Zlin. Present at the negotiations were Prof. Andreas Steigen, rector of the University of the Gambia, as well as Mr. Jacques Zhinou, consul general of the Gambia in the Czech Republic.

Tomas Bata University (TBU) in Zlín is planning to offer some of its study courses in the academic year 2006/2007 at the new establishment in the town of Uherské Hradiště.
The students will be offered the study programme Economics and Management including the bachelor's study courses Information Logistics as well as Economic and Information Support of Crisis Management. The Faculty of Technology shall act as a guarantor for this study programme. After a three-year full-time study the graduates will receive the degree of a Bachelor in Economics. An accreditation of the master's degree study is anticipated, with the graduates being awarded the degree of a Master of Economics. At present, accreditation proceedings are underway, aiming at the start of classes in September 2006.

A meeting between the students and employees of the TBU and the premier of the Czech Republic, Mr. Jiří Paroubek, as well as the vice-premier and at the same time Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Mr. Zdeněk Škromach, will take place on Thursday,  26th January 2006 at 16:00 in the assembly hall of the Congress Centre of the TBU, in the Mostní Street in Zlín.

A festive gathering of employees and students of Tomas Bata University in Zlin on the occasion of the university's 5th anniversary will take place on 24th January 2006 at 11:00 in the Assembly Hall of the Congress Centre, Mostní Street 5139, Zlin.

An exhibition of publicity posters promoting the Bata company and designed between 1930 and 1938 as well as an exposition of works by students at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications - Shoe Design Studio - will take place in the Cultural Institute "Alternativa - Zlin" from 9th to 19th January 2006. The exhibition is open Monday through Friday, every time from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 17:00, on Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:00. The opening ceremony is scheduled for the 9th January 2006 at 17:00. Everyone is cordially invited by the organizers: Tomas Bata University in Zlin, Faculty of Multimedia Communications - Shoe Design Studio and the Shoe Museum.

From 30th January to 3rd February 2006 the main cashier's office will be closed due to the cashier's holiday. In case of emergency a substitute will be provided.

In connection with the "Festive Gathering of Employees and Students of TBU in Zlín", to take place on 24th January 2006, an official day off from 11:00 to 12:30 has been announced for that day and that in accordance with the Rector's Decree No. 1/2006.

The conference "Innovation and Technology Transfer - British Regional Experience" is being organized by the Innovation Centre at the University Institute of the Tomas Bata University in Zlin in cooperation with the British Embassy in the Czech Republic and other partners. The conference is intended for entrepreneurs and public administration representatives in the Zlin Region. It will take place on 11th and 12th January 2006 in the university building in the Mostni Street in Zlin (U2) and is to be inaugurated by the British Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Mr. Linda Duffield, in person.

As in the previous years, this year again the promotional campaign for Miss Academia 2006 is getting under way in December, for the first time with entries allowed to be made not only by female university students but also by female students of technical colleges. The project of the beauty contest is being organized by the students at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín for the tenth time in a row.
