Tomas Bata Foundation Prize

On 15th October 2004, the French attaché, Mr. Franck Hivert, who is the coordinator of the language and educational department of the French embassy in Prague, visited the Tomas Bata University. On the occasion of “French Days in Zlín“, he met Prof. Ing. Roman Prokop, CSc., the Vice-Rector for Pedagogical Activities and the Rector's Deputy.

From 27th September to 1st October 2004, Open Days week took place in the seat of the European Parliament in Brussels. This project introduced the countries that recently joined the European Union. Together with the representatives of the Zlín region and the town of Zlín, a delegation from the Tomas Bata University in Zlín participated in this event. The Zlín region established an agency in Brussels which will be maintained by a consortium of companies from Italy and Great Britain.


TBU in Zlín is preparing a unique exhibition of insignia and gowns. The exhibition will be organized on the occasion of this year's celebration of the Day of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy (17th November), and will start on 23rd November 2004 in the Cultural Institute "Alternativa", Osvoboditelů 3778. The insignia and gowns, the traditional symbols of intelligence, will be on display until 27th November 2004.

The FT Student Union in cooperation with the GTS International organized the traditional event, a welcome party for the first-year students. The party will take place on 19th October 2004 in Club 603, at 8pm. The good news is that it is free to enter. Moreover, every first-year student who shows their student ID or ISIC card will receive a small gift. There will be live music by the bands: Gang Ala Basta, Levitaj and Aréna.


A new group of 50 Vietnamese students will start their study at the TBU Faculty of Technology in the academic year 2004/5. Most of them are interested in the study programme Chemistry and Materials Technology, the specialization in Footwear and Leather Goods technology; four of them want to study in a doctoral study programme. The students are mostly young people coming from the south of Vietnam, where the shoe industry has been flourishing recently.

From April 11th to April 15th 2005 the European Week Eindhoven (EWE) will be held again. The European Week is the largest European student conference: over 450 students from all over Europe will participate in this huge happening at the campus of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) in the Netherlands.

In the new academic year, the Academic Consultancy Centre starts operations at the TBU University Institute. It provides free psychological, legal, and study consultancy to all students and employees of the University, as well as to the people interested in the study at the University and the graduates. The Centre is situated in the U10 building in the TGM square 1279, room No. 321, tel. 576 037 321, e-mail: poradna@uni.utb.cz .

The oldest of the TBU Faculties, the Faculty of Technology, is celebrating a significant anniversary this year - 35 years from its establishment. As a part of the celebration, several events have been planned for this year. The most significant of them is the opening of the new university complex at Jižní Svahy in Zlín on 16th June 2004.

On 5 October 2004, the so-called Global Village, where foreign students introduced their countries to their Czech colleagues, took place in the TBU building in Mostní Street in Zlín. The event was organized by the international student organization AIESEC in cooperation with the Tomas Bata University in Zlín and the Zlín regional authorities. Each of the represented countries had its own stall: the USA, Ukraine, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Russia, Italy, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, including the Zlín region.

Tomas J. Bata

On the 17th September 2004, Mr. Tomas J. Bata, a Canadian entrepreneur of Czech origin and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tomas Bata University in Zlin, will celebrate an important living anniversary, his 90th birthday. The only son of the legendary founder of shoe factories in Zlín will celebrate his birthday on 17th September 2004 in Prague, in the Spanish Hall of Prague Castle. President of the Czech Republic, Mr. Václav Klaus, will be present on the celebration.

With his friends from Zlín Mr. Bata will celebrate his birthday at the end of October: on 27th October 2004 he will attend the meeting of Board of Directors of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín, on 29th October 2004 he will be awarded the Zlin Region Prize in the Zlín Municipal Theatre and on 30th October he will take part in the festive opening of the newly reconstructed Zlín skyscraper, the 21st building of former shoe factories.

Admirers of beautiful and clever young girls should mark the evening of 24 March 2004 in their calendars. On this day, the finals of the Miss Academia contest will take place in the cinema "Velké kino" in Zlín. The theme of this year's contest sounds alluring: an adventurous expedition. What the organizers prepare for the girls, however, remains a secret.

The University gala ball was a total success, as usual. It took place on Saturday, 28 February 2004, in Interhotel Moskva, and its rich programme did not disappoint anyone for sure. Organizing students from Communication Agency of FMC (Faculty of Multimedia Communications) and employees of Academia Centre really pushed on. The whole evening was one big show and ball visitors really appreciated it. The Fashion show with clothes for young people, as well as Latino-American dances and dance-aerobic were rewarded with/by big applause. Luscious belly dancer was not missing as well. The most interesting event of the evening was a nontraditional fashion supplements show. The most original jewel, presented by recent Miss Academia Martina Miková, was put up for auction and his new lucky owner is Tomáš Úlehla, mayor of Zlín. Part of the auction gains will be inscribed to the not-for-profit organization "Dětem" ("For Children").

Tomas Bata Foundation Prize for academic year 2003/4 for the best thesis written and successfully defended in English. The winning candidate will be offered a two week intership with the Bata Shoe Organization in a foreign country (depending on candidate's line of study).


Doc. Ing. Petr Hlaváček, CSc. and his team, who studied the footwear of the prehistorical (?) man, Ötzi, who lived some 5,300 years ago, gained a significant appreciation this year. The American journal Discover listed their research results amongst the one hundred most important scientific discoveries of the year 2003. The Zlín team won this recognition as the only from the whole Czech Republic.

On the 26 January 2004 a ceremonial meeting of the academic community on the occasion of the 3rd anniversary of its foundation took place. The meeting was attended by the University students and employees, but also numerous guests: the Chairmen of the TBU Board of Governors, Tomáš Baťa, Dr. Hon., the Head of the Zlín Region, František Slavík, Town Mayor of Zlín, Tomáš Úlehla, senator Alena Gajdůšková, member of Parliament, Michaela Šojdrová, and others.
