Due to the closing of the refectory during the Christmas Holidays - from 23/12/05 to 01/01/06 - the university employees are entitled to obtain the SYAS meal tickets (except for those who take a holiday in those days). The meal tickets for December must be collected at the main cashier's office in advance, on 22/12/05 at the latest.

Because of an increased interest in their services, the International Affairs Department has introduced office hours for students and academic workers with effect from 1st December 2005. During these hours you can be sure that the staff of the International Affairs Department will be present at their office (building U2, office No. 232) and ready to attend you.

Outside the mentioned office hours a date for an individual meeting can be arranged, if required.

The introduction of office hours is in particular aimed at improving and facilitating the communication between the International Affairs Department, students and university teachers.


A discussion with the former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Mr. Miloš Zeman, Eng., intended for the university students and employees and entitled The view of a prognosticator on the development of the society, will be held in the Assembly hall of the Congress Centre in the Mostní Street in Zlín on 12th December 2005 from 15:00 to 16:00. An autograph session for the book "How I was mistaken about politics" by Miloš Zeman is to follow in the entrance hall.

The first "Illuminating of a University Christmas Tree" in history is to take place on Tuesday, 6th December 2005 in front of the U2 building in the Mostni Street. The event begins at 16:30, the festive illuminating will start at 17:30. Everyone can look forward to a varied accompanying programme including music and dance. All students and employees of the TBU are invited to come with their families. Sweets will be provided for children, for adults tea, mulled wine, sausages and potato pancakes, all for free (while stocks last). For the duration of the event an official day off has been announced by the Rector.

In connection with the event called "Illuminating of the University Christmas Tree", to take place on 6th December 2005, an official day off from 16:30 to 18:30 has been announced for that day and that in accordance with the Rector's Decree No. 10/2005. At the time announced, no classes will be held at the TBU faculties in Zlin and the examination sessions and tutorial hours of academic workers shall be cancelled.

The 82nd plenary session of the Czech Conference of Rectors is to be held at the Tomas Bata University in Zlín, at the campus of Jižní svahy, in the street Nad Stráněmi 4511, from 1st to 2nd December 2005. Rectors of public, state and private universities and higher education institutions at university level have been invited to participate in the session. Mrs. Petra Buzková, J. D., the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, has promised to attend the session.

The Czech Conference of Rectors unites the representatives of public, state and private higher education institutions in the Czech Republic (university as well as non-university institutions) and arranges for their joint course of action to be taken in important matters concerning the development of the education level, science and research as well as higher education institutions and their students, academic workers and other employees. Prof. Ing. Petr Sáha, CSc., the rector of the TBU in Zlín, holds the post of the vice-chairman of the Czech Conference of Rectors (in charge of economic and social affairs).


The demolition of the MusicLand A-building (the former cinema "Svět") in Zlín started on 25th November 2005, the building is to be razed to the ground in a few days. The MusicLand A had to make way to the construction work. In the town centre, at the place where the former Masaryk Schools were once situated, a complex of multifunctional buildings named the Congress and University Centre Zlín will go up within two years.

New machines and equipment, software and laboratory equipment have been acquired by the Tomas Bata University in Zlín according to the information given by the university bursar, RNDr. Alexander Černý. "Thanks to the financial resources allocated, coming from the project called The TBU Infrastructure Support that has been selected as one of the development programmes of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, we have been enabled to buy machines and equipment, laboratory equipment etc., with the total value exceeding 26 millions CZK." The new equipment will be used by an increasing number of students in Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral Degree Programmes.

The third edition of the national conference Database World 2005 is to take place on 1st December 2005 in the Wichterle's Hall at the TBU, Mostni Street 5139. This year's edition is devoted to the topic of modern database architectures. The conference is organized by the Information Portal for Database Technologies "Database World" and the Center for Investigations into Information Systems - the technical section of the Czech Company for Systems Integration together with the Department of Production Management - Industrial Engineering at the Faculty of Management and Economics. The Tomas Bata University in Zlin has become a member of the association ENAS - European Network of Academic Sports Services. That happened at a conference held from 9th to 13th November 2005 at the University in Maribor and attended by 17 European countries (Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic - TBU in Zlin, Croatia, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, France, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain). Next year the conference will be organized by another member country - Estonia.

The Faculty of Management and Economics of the TBU in cooperation with the Students' Union will commemorate the Students' Day during a festive gathering of students and university employees in the TBU Assembly Hall in the Mostni Street on 15th November 2005. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 13:00. (Participating students will be excused from classes.) During the programme those students at the FaMe who have achieved outstanding results in studies, sports, etc. shall be awarded honours. As a guest, Eng. Pavel Velev, executive director of the Tomas Bata Foundation, will speak about the Bata School of Work.

The virtuoso violinist Pavel Šporcl addressed his audience on 25th October 2005 in the assembly hall at the Congress Centre of the TBU when presenting his new image for the first time. During the concert forming part of the tour named Novelty Concerto he played compositions having their world premiere. He was accompanied in an unconventional way - by the Josef Vejvoda Jazz Trio and by the North Bohemian Philharmonic Orchestra from Teplice. The preparation of the concert had been difficult due to the necessary change of the stage setup in the assembly hall owing to a great number of performing artists. 

An interesting lecture entitled "Water in Australia: Challenges and Trends" was given on 1st November 2005 at the Faculty of Technology. The lecture was presented in English (involving questions in Czech) and the lecturer was Dr. Zdeněk Kotásek, Czech by origin, resident in Australia. Dr. Kotásek worked as the head of tannery research in Otrokovice from 1966 to 1969, in the early 1970s he emigrated to Sri Lanka where he was leading a team laying foundations for the development of leather-processing industry in the country. During more than 15 years he was working for the company Bata India, at first as the boss of the largest Indian tannery, later on as the general manager of all Bata India tanneries, responsible for the research and disposal of waste water produced by this industry. He has built and modernized several sewage treatment plants interesting from the technological and economic point of view, not only in India but also in other countries in Southeast Asia, Africa and Australia. During the past decade he was participating in the research of chemical technology at the University of South Australia.

The third edition of the student film festival (this year with the subtitle MIXER) is scheduled to be held from 21st to 24th November 2005, being organized by the students of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications. Besides presenting the films in competition the festival wïll involve a varied complementary programme offering entertainment for everyone. The opening ceremony will take place in the cultural institute "Alternativa" on Monday, 21st November at 16:00. The films in competition are to be screened in the Otto Wichterle's hall (U2 building, Mostni Street) from Monday to Wednesday, every day starting at 17:00. The programme will also include workshops, seminars and talks, not to forget the festival party. You can find the detailed programme on the website www.mixer.utb.cz and on posters.

Regional Innovation Strategy of the Zlin region”- the opening conference within an EU project was held at the TBU in Zlin on 2nd November 2005. The conference forms part of a project organized by the Zlin region in cooperation with local and foreign partners. The project aims at developing a regional innovation strategy of the Zlin region and its Action Plan comprising activities that shall contribute to improve the competitiveness of the local enterprise sphere and make the Zlin region more attractive to innovative business activities. The Zlin region as one of the European regions has received a grant from the financial resources of the 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, intended for working out its Regional Innovation Strategy.

An opening celebration on the occasion of the exhibition of photographs and at the same time dissertations presented by students will take place on Monday, 7th November 2005 at 17:00 in the upper foyer of the Town Theatre in Zlín. The authors are students at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications, Miss Karolína Némethová and Mr. David Trčka. The exhibition shall be on view in the theatre until the end of 2005. "We consider the cooperation with the students of the Fine Arts at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications as enriching for both sides and we intend to continue to cooperate also in the future," said the theatre's press officer, Ms. Jarmila Trávníčková.

A lecture given by EuroCommissioner Mr. Vladimír Špidla on "Current Problems of the EU" will take place on 11th November 2005 at 10:00 in the great hall of the Congress Centre in the Mostní Street in Zlín. The organizers are the Tomas Bata University in Zlín and the civic association Euro Study.

The 82nd plenary session of the Czech Conference of Rectors will be held at the Tomas Bata University in Zlin on 1st and 2nd December 2005.

The computer classroom in the U1 building (Faculty of Technology) will be open Monday through Friday from 07:00 to 16:00. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays the classroom will be closed. During the closing period our students can use the supervised computer classrooms in the library, in the U2 building or in the U5 building at the Jižní Svahy campus site.

The first edition of the international festival of amateur theatre called "Techtle UTeBe"  is being organized by the Tomas Bata University in Zlin (Faculty of Multimedia Communications) together with the theatre "Mala scena" and the Primary Art School Zlin from 12th to 16th October 2005.  The opening ceremony took place on Wednesday, 12th October, at 20:00 in the assembly hall of the Congress Centre in the Mostni Street in Zlin. On the occasion of the festival several theatre groups will perform, e.g. theatre companies coming from Hvozdna, Prague, Brno, Olomouc or Partizanske (Slovakia). Apart from theatrical performances a pantomime workshop, a puppet show, dramatherapy, improvisation and drumming will be held. The ceremonial matriculations of first-year students at the TBU will take place on the following dates:

All matriculations will be held in the Great Hall of the Congress Centre situated in the TBU building in the Mostn Street in Zln.


A conference dealing with Productivity of enterprises in the plastics processing industry and cluster initiatives in the region was held on 15th September 2005 at the Tomas Bata University in Zlín (in the building situated in the Mostní Street, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The conference was organized by the Faculty of Management and Economics, by the University Institute and the Technological Innovative Centre, Ltd.

On 17th June 2005 the waiting list for housing concerning second- to fifth-year students and doctorands was published. For the waiting lists for housing and the lists of accommodation assigned please refer to www.kmz.utb.cz, KOLEJE ON-LINE.

We can offer alternative accommodation to students who have not been provided with accommodation at the TBU Hall of Residence in Zlín - refer to www.kmz.utb.cz, "bufferová lůžka" (buffer beds).


This year is the fourth time the civic association called Becario announces a scholarship programme created in order to support talented students of technically-oriented subjects. Students at selected universities have an opportunity to receive a contribution amounting to 30 000 CZK for the academic year 2005/6. For related information please refer to: www.becario.cz.

With effect from 1st August 2005 the rector of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín appointed a new dean of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications. The new dean appointed, doc. Ing. Jaroslav Světlík, Ph. D., takes the office over from the preceding dean, Professor Pavel Škarka, M.F.A., who was heading the faculty since the establishment in 2002.


The classes in the academic year 2005/2006 will start on September 19th, 2005.

When the refectory is closed (from July 11th to July 31st, 2005, i.e. during 15 working days), the employees are entitled to obtain the SYAS-meal tickets. Those can be obtained at the main cashier's office since July 11th, 2005.


The team of scientists of the Faculty of Technology at the Tomas Bata University in Zlín under the leadership of the senior lecturer Mr. Petr Hlaváček, MSc., PhD, managed to obtain a research authorization to examine the footwear to be found on the feet of the so-called terracotta warriors in China. The mission of 4 scientists of the Department of Footwear Engineering and Hygiene is to map in detail the shoe design on the statues of the ancient soldiers. The research team will work on the grant financed by the Ministry of Education till the end of 2006. The research will result in publishing of a catalogue where the dimensions, materials and cuts of the shoes will be exactly specified.

The Academic Senate of TBU approved the proposal for the foundation of a fourth faculty called Faculty of Applied Informatics in its session on 10th May, 2005. This decision is to be approved by the Accreditation Committee of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. The Faculty should start on 1st January, 2006. The newly founded faculty will be based on departments at the Faculty of Technology.Department of System Analysis and Project Control is going to be founded in order to offer more opportunities to study. The faculty will seat in the newly built university premises at Jižní Svahy, the equipment of which meets the European standards.


A template for Writer OpenOffice.org has been prepared in advance next to the template for Microsoft Word. Other versions, including a template for TeX, will be available in June 2005.

The templates may be downloaded on the university website, under the section Směrnice rektora č. 41/2004. 


A competition about European Union, its history, representatives, particular member and joining countries and other aspects of European Union has been prepared by Mgr. Tomáš Zatloukal, a member of European Parliament from the Zlín region. It will proceed only electronically. Any citizen of the Czech Republic above 18 may become involved. You may register on www.evropskestranky.cz. The invested effort will be worthwhile – thirty participants will win a visit to the European Parliament and other EU institutions in Brussels and European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Contest finals for the best university student took place in Velké kino on Wednesday, 6th April. Miss Academia 2005 title was awarded to Darja Lešanovská, a student of the fourth year of the Faculty of Management and Economics, Tomas Bata University in Zlín. Jitka Putnarová from University of Defence in Brno placed second. This student of the Faculty of Military Technologies was recognized also by the public who elected her Miss Academia On-line via voting on the Internet. Jitka Putnarová, the Warrant Officer, received recognition from university students who elected her Miss Academia SMS by means of short messages. Nina Pavelková, a student of philosophy from the University in Ostrava, was awarded the third place.

A meeting with Mr. Tomas Bata, a Canadian entrepreneur, is taking place in 0111/U2, Mostní ulice, Zlín at 11 o'clock on Friday, 15 April 2005. Students, pedagogues and others may talk casually with Mr. Bata. Especially those who want to discuss the Bata business system are greatly welcomed!

A traditional student ceremony - the rag day - is taking place on 27th April 2005. As the title "Spicy mix" reveals, the piquant cultural and sports programme will satisfy even a discriminating visitor.

An attractive programme incl. a tombola has been prepared for the 5th representative ball of TBU, which is taking place in the interhotel Moskva at 20:00 on 18th March 2005. The organizers promise several fashion-shows and dance performances. There shall be "a midnight surprise" including a fashion-show of evening dresses and accessoires made by FMC students, auction of an original jewel and drawing of tombola winning numbers. Visitors may choose among three kinds of music: Marathon Band in the Congress Hall, disco, funky and hip hop in the second hall and the cymbal band Včelaran on the second floor.

The first international doctorands' conference is organized by the organization committee of FaME doctorands under the auspices of Tomas Bata Foundation, commissioner of the Zlín district and Faculty of Management and Economics. It is taking place on April 21, 2005.

Students of visual arts programmes at Faculty of Multimedia Communications are putting their works on display in the foyer of Městské divadlo in Zlín till 28th February 2005. On 90 stalls and in several show-cases, the exhibition called Visual Communication represents works of students studying Graphic and 3D design, Clothes and Footwear design, Advertising Photography and other courses. It will please all fans of visual arts.


A fair of job opportunities named iKariéra is organized by IAESTE at TBU in Zlín. It will take place in the university building at Mostní ulice in Zlin, in Academia Centrum, on 9th March 2005.

The aim is to put in touch university and college students with their potential employers. As last year, companies will present themselves in their stands, and also by means of lectures given in the hall. In the afternoon, representatives of the companies and TBU will meet and commemorate the 40. anniversary of IAESTE foundation in the Czech Republic.


A public collection is being taken at TBU in cooperation with ADRA Foundation. All the proceeds will be donated to disaster victims in South-east Asia.

Sealed cashboxes have been placed in study departments of particular faculties, in the library, refectory and at the porter's in the U2 building.

We hope that TBU students and employees will show their solidarity with people who have been struck by a natural disaster that is without parallel.


A delegation from our university, led by the Rector prof. Petr Sáha, has succeeded in establishing promising contacts with a Russian university in St. Peterburg. The local university has an age-old tradition (it was founded by Peter the Great). It is interesting that six Nobel prize-winners worked here. At St. Peterburg University, the TBU representatives held negotiations on possibilities of cooperation with local professors in the field of philology and at the Academy of Science, they discussed possibilities of cooperation in sciences and possibilities of talented students from Russian universities to study in doctoral and post-doctoral degree study programmes at out university. Results from negotiations came very soon. “We have already received several job applications from Russian pedagogues. Also Russian students started to enrol in studies,“ prof. Sáha said.

The jury will be looking for a beautiful, witty and interesting girl, a girl that has something about herself, among competitors of the 9th year of Miss Academia this time. It is organized by students of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications who are preparing the contest within the framework of the subject Communication Agency. The ceremonial finals will take place in Velké kino in Zlín (The Great Cinema) on 6th April 2005. Not only a new Miss of Czech and Slovaque students but also Miss Press and Miss On-line will be proclaimed there. Looking for a gracious partner for the agent 007 James Bond is supposed to be the main motif of the finals.
